The defect-induced carrier doping in epitaxial films of the parent compound SrCuO{sub 2} is reviewed. Two superconducting descendants were synthesized by expanding the role of natural defects in the parent SuCuO{sub 2} films, namely, the Ruddlesheim-Popper phases Sr{sub n+1}Cu{sub n}O{sub 2n+1} and a nonstoichiometric variant of the oxycarbonate Sr{sub 2}CuO{sub 2}(CO{sub 3}). The synthesis and structures are described.
