A method of and system for removing cesium from a liquid metal reactor coolant including a carbon packing trap in the primary coolant system for absorbing a major portion of the radioactive cesium from the coolant flowing therethrough at a reduced temperature. A regeneration subloop system having a secondary carbon packing trap is selectively connected to the primary system for isolating the main trap therefrom and connecting it to the regeneration system. A method for removing cesium from a liquid metal circulating through a primary cooling system of a nuclear reactor is described which consists of: providing a primary carbon packing trap in the primary system, continually absorbing cesium from the coolant onto the carbon packing trap at a relatively low temperature until the trap is substantially saturated with cesium, isolating the primary trap when saturated from the primary system by disconnecting the trap therefrom and connecting the primary trap to a closed regeneration flow system having a secondary carbon packing trap. Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF) cold traps, including the Reactor Primary Cold Trap, the Reactor Secondary Cold Trap and the Closed Loop Cold Trap were fabricated and their thermal performances measured on sodium test systems. The cold traps all met reactor requirements after necessary economizer modifications. Mercury tests were performed to study the effect of woven wire packing on the flow of a liquid metal adjacent to a heated vertical wall as occurs in the cold trap crystallizer.
