Bioremediation on a big scale
- Camp Dresser & McKee Inc., Cambridge, MA (United States)
At a former glass bottle manufacturing facility in southern New Jersey, leaking underground fuel oil had contaminated some 16,000 cubic yards of sandy soil. Total petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations ran as high as 20,000 mg/kg. Treatment options to achieve a cleanup goal of 1,000 mg/kg total hydrocarbons, including excavating the contaminated soil and landfilling it, were evaluated in the context of cost efficiency and length of treatment. And after weighing traditional approaches with some innovative alternatives, site engineers decided to apply one such innovative method - an ex situ biotreatment system - to remediate the site. The innovative cleanup, conducted by Camp Dresser & McKee, uses two large, aerated {open_quotes}biopiles{close_quotes} to harness naturally occurring aerobic bacteria to degrade the fuel oil by providing controlled doses of moisture, air and nutrients.
