Competing processes of electrostatic plasma waves excited by auroral electron beams: Comparison of EXOS D observation results with computer simulations

The authors develop models to explain the wave phenomena observed by the EXOS D satellite in the auroral regions of strong electron precipitation. Dependent upon the plasma density, upper hybrid waves are observed, vs electrostatic whistler waves. The authors use computer calculations to study the growth rates of these oscillation modes as a function of the ratio of the plasma frequency and the electron cyclotron frequency. These emissions are features of the auroal hiss generated by electron precipitation in the auroral regions.
