At the earth`s quasi-perpendicular bow shock, power spectra show electromagnetic waves propagating obliquely to the magnetic field at frequencies above the ion cyclotron frequency. The authors model the bow shock region as a hot maxwellian core of plasmas, and a roughly gyrotropic ring current, and show that this distribution is able to mimic the observed wave activity, and anisotropic distribution. They show the the ring current is capable of supporting wave instabilities. They model various wave growth rates in terms of a monoenergetic ring current, and allow the velocity spread of the ring particles to spread. Their results show that many of the observations of the AMPTE/IRM wave data can be explained in terms of a monoenergetic ion ring beam.
