Large deformation of hygrothermoviscoelasticity for environmental effects on the cross-ply laminates
- National Cheng-Kung Univ., Tainan (Taiwan, Province of China). Dept. of Engineering Science
After the curing process of the composite materials, the residual stress and warp on the composites may appear because of environmental effects, e.g. temperature and humidity effects. Based on the finite element method, this paper applies the Von Karman theory, viscoelasticity and recognizes the mechanical properties of the composites affected by the temperature and humidity as a behavior of HTSM (hygrothermorheologically Simple Material). The composites with a free boundary of a [0/90/0{sub 4}/90{sub 4}/0/90] antisymmetric, cross-ply AS4/3502 Graphite/epoxy laminate are adopted. The residual stress and warp of the composites under different combinations of environmental temperature and humidity are predicted; in addition, the layer with more serious damages can be judged. The results are compared with those obtained from the Ritz method. It clarifies that the Ritz method is only apt to the analysis on special shape functions for specific laminates. Thus, the analytical method herein, without such a limitation, is more general and practical.
