We have demonstrated a thermally compensated KTiOPO{sub 4} (KTP) {ital Q}-switch with a 10 mm {times} 6 mm clear aperture and high contrast ratio. This device showed excellent resistance to thermal depolarization at average power densities as high as 1 kW/cm{sup 2}. Capacitive coupling allowed us to operate the {ital Q}-switch for greater than 10{sup 9} shots with no sign of electrochromic damage. {copyright} {ital 1995} {ital American} {ital Institute} {ital of} {ital Physics}.
