Gas cofiring with western coal is in progress at Joppa Unit 1 of Electric Energy Inc. (EEI) to evaluate gas cofiring parameters which will improve unit performance and availability while minimizing total cost of power generation. The project, undertaken by Energy and Environmental Research Corporation, is co-sponsored by the Gas Research Institute, Trunkline Gas Company, and EEI. In compliance with the Phase 1 requirements of the Clean Air Act Amendments, low NO{sub x} burners have been installed on this 181 MW tangential fired unit and the fuel supply switched to a low sulfur western coal. A comprehensive test program has been initiated to optimize unit performance with natural gas cofiring system. During gas cofiring system commissioning and check out tests, several gas cofiring benefits have been utilized such as recovery of unit derates caused by fan limitations and loss of mill capacity. Significant cost savings were also realized during unit start-up with gas rather than oil, to provide additional heat to the primary air to increase pulverizer capacity when firing the high moisture, low heating value western coal.
