Specimens of mild steel plate were cleaned to near-white by air blasting with different types, sizes and hardnesses of steel abrasives. The cleaning rate increased as the abrasive hardness increased, and the adhesion between a zinc coating and the blast-cleaned surface improved. For abrasives of a given size, both cleaning rate and adhesion increased as surface profile measurements R{sub a}, R{sub max}, and R{sub z} increased. For a given hardness, smaller abrasives cleaned more rapidly than did larger abrasives. Tests in a centrifugal blast machine demonstrated the superior abrasiveness of a harder abrasive.
