The major cause of failure in refinery systems is corrosion. From the standpoint of economic loss to the refiner, corrosion related problems are the most expensive and hazardous problems in the industry today. Two basic types of corrosion activity are present in most refineries. These are high temperature corrosion and aqueous phase corrosion. This work focuses on monitoring corrosion mechanisms in the aqueous phase. Thus, the objective is to present a view of such corrosion mechanisms as may exist in a refinery crude unit overhead system, as being typical of refinery aqueous phase corrosion and to describe how these mechanisms can be mitigated and monitored to provide a proactive approach to corrosion control.
