Since the Clean Air Act was passed in 1970 and the Clean Water Act in 1972, as well as the amendments to each, the steel industry has been required to invest huge sums of money. The impact of environmental legislation will continue costly in terms of facilities and operations during the years ahead, but will motivate steel companies toward increased efficiency and improved production costs. Many of these regulations have been directed to coke ovens and significant expenditures have been made to bring the facilities into compliance with the statutes. The results has been a number of closures of coke-oven batteries that would have required too great an investment to bring into compliance.
