Damage initiation and progressive fracture of adhesively bonded graphite/epoxy composites is investigated under tensile and compressive loading. An integrated computer code is utilized for the simulation of composite structural degradation. Results indicate that adhesive properties have a significant effect on structural durability even when damage initiation/progression is not in the adhesive bond. Design implications with regard to damage tolerance of adhesively bonded joints are examined. Influence of the type of loading and the choice of adhesive on damage initiation and progression for adhesively bonded composites are investigated.
