Growth of composite materials for general, civilian applications will demand cost-effective design methodology, automated manufacturing and performance certification. The high tech model developed by the aerospace industry can be applied to general applications with added emphasis on cost and reliability. Opportunities are unlimited. Grid/frame structures in particular offer an excellent balance between high performance and low cost manufacturing. Technical merits of such structures are described.
