Nuclear power's future in OECD countries

Mr. Echavarri, Director-General of the Nuclear Energy Agency of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) answered a series of questions regarding the future of nuclear energy use and development in OECD countries. The following questions were answered: what improvements are needed to make nuclear power plants a viable option from a capital and production cost viewpoint; what improvements should be made in high-level waste disposal to ensure a stable future for nuclear power; what will it take to make ordering a new nuclear power plant in OECD countries a reality; how can the government help to facilitate the construction of a first-of-a-kind nuclear power plant in OECD countries; why is the diversity of fuel supply important; how has the economy and safety of existing nuclear power plants improved over the past five years; what is the best available technology for the construction of new nuclear power plants; where will the next generation of nuclear professionals needed in the nuclear industry, governmental and regulatory bodies come from; and, can the hydrogen economy provide a future for the growth of the nuclear power industry. Also included is a side box brief on the Generation IV Technology roadmap.
