The usual reason for undertaking a LP retrofit is mechanical problems with the OEM design. This presents the opportunity to introduce an advanced aerodynamic technology with proven mechanical reliability. This paper describes recent retrofit commissions as a solution for stress corrosion cracking, torsional problems, erosional problems, and increased efficiency. It is shown that advantage can be taken from proven technologies implying that predominantly long-term tested standard components can be applied to bring a permanent solution to these mechanical problems. Many of the existing LP applications which are potential retrofit commissions were designed in the late 60`s or beginning of the 70`s. Since then methods for aerodynamic turbine design have improved essentially leaving a substantial potential for efficiency improvements by just applying current design rules. Particularly in Europe there have been recent retrofit cases where there were no mechanical problems and where efficiency improvement was the only driving force.
