Capacitance transducers have been successfully used to measure the phase fractions and time response characteristics of gas-liquid-two-phase flow. For the past two decades, the Tulsa University Fluid Flow Projects (TUFFP) have developed and used these instruments to conduct applied research applicable to the simultaneous flow of gas and liquids in oil and gas wells and pipelines. In this paper, the progress and application history of capacitance transducers at TUFFP is briefly reviewed. The latest generation of the TUFFP ratio-arm bridge capacitance transducer is described, including its electrode optimization, circuit specifics, grounding and shielding techniques, tune-up and calibration, etc. A few typical applications of the capacitance transducer in two-phase slug flow research, such as the measurements of liquid holdup, slug length and slug translational velocity, are presented. Finally, plans for further improvements are presented.
