Unusual icosahedral cluster compounds. Open-shell Na{sub 4}A{sub 6}Tl{sub 13} (A = K, Rb, Cs) and the metallic zintl phase Na{sub 3}K{sub 8}Tl{sub 13} (how does chemistry work in solids?)
- Ames Lab., IA (United States)
We report examples of how tuning with cation sizes can allow the isolation of remarkable cluster units not known in the binary alloys, the centered icosahedral polyanions of Tl{sub 13}{sup 10-} in Na{sub 4}A{sub 6}Tl{sub 13} (A = K, Rb, Cs), and Tl{sub 13}{sup 11-} in Na{sub 3}K{sub 8}Tl{sub 13}. The important effects of centering and cation size on the bonding and stability are discussed. We also correlate the structures with the observed electrical and magnetic properties, for which those of the closed-shell Na{sub 3}K{sub 8}Tl{sub 13} compound also provide further support for the concept of a `metallic Zintl phase` developed previously. Efforts are also made to show, through these magnificient examples, how chemistry is involved in the synthesis, bonding, and properties of the solids. 47 refs., 7 figs., 4 tabs.
