The rapidity distributions of {pi}{sup {minus}} mesons in pC, dC, {alpha}C, and CC interactions at 4.2 GeV/c per nucleon are analyzed as functions of transverse pion momentum. The experimental data are compared with the results of calculations in the quark-gluon string model (QGSM). The model is shown to provide a satisfactory description of the experimental distributions of {pi}{sup {minus}} mesons. For various intervals of the transverse momentum, the contributions of {pi}{sup {minus}} mesons from the decays of {Delta}{sup 0{minus}} isobars, {rho}{sup 0{minus}}, {omega}, {eta}, and {eta}{prime} mesons; and prompt {pi}{sup {minus}} mesons to the rapidity distributions are determined using the QGSM. 10 refs., 6 figs., 4 tabs.
