Title: Microdrill Initiative - Initial Market Evaluation

Abstract

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is launching a major research and development initiative to create a small, fast, inexpensive and environmentally friendly rig for drilling 5000 feet boreholes to investigate potential oil and gas reservoirs. DOE wishes to get input from petroleum industry operators, service companies and equipment suppliers on the operation and application of this coiled-tubing-based drilling unit. To that end, DOE has asked Spears & Associates, Inc. (SAI) to prepare a special state-of-the-market report and assist during a DOE-sponsored project-scoping workshop in Albuquerque near the end of April 2003. The scope of the project is four-fold: (1) Evaluate the history, status and future of demand for very small bore-hole drilling; (2) Measure the market for coiled tubing drilling and describe the state-of-the-art; (3) Identify companies and individuals who should have an interest in micro drilling and invite them to the DOE workshop; and (4) Participate in 3 concurrent workshop sessions, record and evaluate participant comments and report workshop conclusions.

  • Project BEST (Better Employment through Skills Training) is a labor-market information pilot program, developed and implemented by Universal Systems Development, Inc. in an urban public high school in Philadelphia. Participating students spend one class period per day during their final year of high school in Project BEST activities, which primarily consist of special classroom instruction, augmented by outside speakers, work shadowing, and both individual and group counseling. This report is an evaluation of the net impact of the program on the educational attainment and post high school labor market experiences of students, all of whom were black, who participated inmore » Project BEST during the 1979-1980 and 1980-1981 school years. It is based on a quasi-experimental design using a non-randomized comparison group drawn from two other nearby public high schools in Philadelphia. Multiple regression was the primary statistical technique used to estimate net program impacts.« less
  • Under the sponsorship of the Department of Energy, Office of Utility Technologies, the Battery Analysis and Evaluation Department and the Photovoltaic System Assistance Center of Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) initiated a U.S. industry-wide PV Energy Storage System Survey. Arizona State University (ASU) was contracted by SNL in June 1995 to conduct the survey. The survey included three separate segments tailored to: (a) PV system integrators, (b) battery manufacturers, and (c) PV charge controller manufacturers. The overall purpose of the survey was to: (a) quantify the market for batteries shipped with (or for) PV systems in 1995, (b) quantify the PVmore » market segments by battery type and application for PV batteries, (c) characterize and quantify the charge controllers used in PV systems, (d) characterize the operating environment for energy storage components in PV systems, and (e) estimate the PV battery market for the year 2000. All three segments of the survey were mailed in January 1996. This report discusses the purpose, methodology, results, and conclusions of the survey.« less
  • The study of competition in an industry focuses upon the analysis of its market structure, conduct, and performance. Principal descriptors of the market structure of the petroleum industry are the degree of vertical integration and horizontal concentration which it exhibits. This report presents a methodology for calculating an index of vertical integration and applies the methodology to the 1974 operations of 40 large U.S. refiners. The methodology is predicated upon a concept suggested in a 1954 study by McLean and Haigh. This study encompasses five stages: crude production, crude transportation, refining, product transportation, and product marketing.
  • This chapter presents BPA's market price forecasts, which are based on AURORA modeling. AURORA calculates the variable cost of the marginal resource in a competitively priced energy market. In competitive market pricing, the marginal cost of production is equivalent to the market-clearing price. Market-clearing prices are important factors for informing BPA's rates. AURORA is used as the primary tool for (a) calculation of the demand rate, (b) shaping the PF rate, (c) estimating the forward price for the IOU REP settlement benefits calculation for fiscal years 2008 and 2009, (d) estimating the uncertainty surrounding DSI payments, (e) informing the secondarymore » revenue forecast and (f) providing a price input used for the risk analysis.« less
