This document serves as the technical basis for sampling airborne radioactive particulates at the Plutonium Finishing Plant (PFP). This document explains how PFP meets requirements associated with fixed head air sampling, grab air sampling, and real-time air monitoring, irrespective of whether the air sampling or monitoring uses temporary equipment, or permanently installed equipment. The basis for air monitoring in specific cases, however, is found in job-specific work plans and/or radiological work permits. Using requirements given in HNF-PRO-331 (Workplace Air Monitoring Program) as a working outline, this document addresses: performance and acceptance testing of new equipment; filter media characteristics; sample transport line losses; flow rate and duration of sample collection; identification of relevant supplies and equipment by manufacturer, make, and model performance of air flow studies; rationale for the use and placement of air samplers and real-time air monitors; rationale for demonstrating that air samples are representative of air breathed by workers; list of, and a facility map showing, actual locations of air sampling and real-time air monitoring equipment; calculation of the decision level, minimum detectable activity, and minimum; detectable concentration for sampling/counting configurations; procedures for sample analysis; procedures for sample accountability; routine maintenance and calibration of equipment; and deviations from HNF-PRO-331.
