Reconciling the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka rule with strong pair creation

Journal Article · · Physical Review D
OSTI ID:803364

One of the mysteries of the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka (OZI) rule is that it is characterized by a scale Lambda {sub OZI} that is small compared to a typical hadronic width Gamma, whereas unitarity would lead one to expect Lambda {sub OZI} {approx} Gamma. We show that while individual virtual decay channels contribute to OZI violation with this expected strength, the coherence between all such channels can conspire to make Lambda {sub OZI} << Gamma, as observed.
