Kirchhoff migration and AVO in the case of a thinly layered overburden

Conference ·
OSTI ID:80319

For wave propagation through a stack of thin horizontal layers a frequency-dependent anisotropy of physical parameters and a significant transmission loss is observed. Information on depth, dip and reflection coefficients of a target zone obtained by seismic migration/inversion schemes and amplitude versus offset (AVO) analysis will, therefore, be distorted by overburden effects. If few statistical parameters of such a vertically inhomogeneous medium are known, a generalized O`Doherty-Anstey formula can be used for taking into account this influence of the overburden. This analytic formula represents the transmission response of a random stack of layers for an incident time-harmonic plane wave. The authors combine amplitude-preserving prestack Kirchhoff migration with the generalized O`Doherty-Anstey formula to recover the true AVO/AVA behavior of a target zone. The correction is demonstrated for the case of SH-waves.
