A crosswell seismic experiment has been conducted in a geothermal field in Japan. The purpose of this experiment was to determine the detailed interwell structure of the volcanic rocks and to identify a zone of fractures by integrating the result with geological and hydraulic information. An advanced three-component and multi-level downhole receiver has also been developed, which can withstand the high temperature conditions. The new receiver can be operated at the temperature up to 260 C (500 F). The velocity tomogram derived from the crosswell experiment has a much higher resolution than that of reflection images from VSP and surface seismic data. Moreover, the absolute value of the tomogram fairly coincides with the acoustic logging data. The average difference at both wells is only about 5%. The authors believe that the interwell velocity structure represents the variation of the lithology between two wells. The result encourages one to apply the crosswell seismic method in geothermal exploration.
