Flavor Asymmetry of the Nucleon Sea: Unambiguous Role of Goldstone Bosons

Conference ·
OSTI ID:801499
We consider the non-analytic behavior of {bar d}(x)-{bar u}(x) and s(x)-{bar s}(x) as a function of quark mass. Using the fact that such non-analytic behavior is a unique characteristic of Goldstone boson loops, we establish two features of the nucleon sea in a model independent fashion. First, we establish the unambiguous role of the pion cloud of the nucleon in the observed excess of {bar d} over {bar u} quarks in the proton. Second, we establish that s(x) cannot in general be equal to {bar s}(x).
