Electrochemical galvanic couples of two dissimilar metals have been designed and fabricated to perform as thin film microsensors of corrosion and material degradation. The sensor design and configuration are unique in terms of metal selection to form a galvanic couple of desired sensitivity and applicability to various exposure environments. A real-time data acquisition unit with portable (removable) memory provides long term data storage and off-site analysis. The sensors have been successfully used in salt-spray chambers, humidity cabinets and hidden structures for monitoring environmental corrosivity, and under coatings, sealants, and in lay-ups of graphite-polymer composites as early warning devices of adhesion and/or material failures.
