The performance of AS4/3501-6 composite material exposed to distilled, deionized water or to 0.5N NaCl solution was compared using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. Degradation of the composites, probably by moisture absorption versus electrochemical processes, resulted in microblistering of the surface. Initially the thin polymer layer directly over the carbon fibers did not blister. The location of the blistering was in the polymer layer separating adjacent carbon fibers which intersected with the surface. Little difference between the surfaces exposed to the different solutions was noted, the exception being the crystallites formed in the chloride solution. Impedance analysis over periods up to 210 days has shown a high correlation between damage and frequency response.
