Current Capabilities for Emergency Response Consequence Assessment at DOE's Savannah River Site

Conference ·
OSTI ID:799426

Since the early 1970s the Weather Information and Display (WIND) System has provided the DOE's Savannah River Site an automated, real-time capability for consequence assessment during emergency response. The fundamental design of the system seamlessly integrates real-time meteorological and hydrological data with a suite of environmental transport models to produce a prompt and highly reliable product. Subsequent developments over the years have significantly improved the quality and reliability of data collection, and capabilities for environmental modeling. Recent developments include operational implementation of state-of-the-science modeling tools for atmospheric and aqueous transport and better tools for integrating WIND system products into the overall consequence assessment/protective action process. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of current WIND System capabilities, with particular emphasis on these recent advances.
