Failure Analysis of Coating Defects

Conference ·
OSTI ID:799362

A series of thermo-mechanical finite element analysis is used to assess the stability of a 12-mm reference interfacial defect in an epoxy-phenolic (topcoat)/inorganic zinc (IOZ, primer) coating system on steel plates during exposure to postulated nuclear power plant loss of coolant accident (LOCA) steam environments. Failure of the coating due to ''peel-back'' or delamination and cracking can generate debris. The failure criteria include the adhesion energy of the coating to the substrate, the ultimate stress and the failure strain of the topcoat material. The results show that the defect of this coating system remains intact and no debris can be generated during a temperature excursion.
