Spent nuclear fuel from the Savannah River Site's Receiving Basin for Offsite Fuel (RBOF) is being shipped across the site to the 105-L Disassembly Basin (L-Basin). The spent nuclear fuel is of various designs including aluminum-clad research reactor fuels, prototype power reactor fuels, and other irradiated materials (i.e., targets, control rods). The relocation of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) to the L-Basin will result in the complete de-inventorying of RBOF that allows for shutdown of the facility. Timetable for the closure of RBOF is late 2006. Mortgage costs can then be reprogrammed into the proposed SNF Treatment and Storage Facility that utilizes the melt-dilute process.
