Spallation Neutron Source Target Station Issues

Conference ·
OSTI ID:788525
Preliminary design and analysis indicate that a very attractive short-pulse neutron source operating at 1 MW of proton beam power can be constructed for the National Spallation Neutron Source (NSNS) using liquid mercury as the target material. Research and development activities have been identified to validate design concepts and to allow future upgrades to higher power levels. Reasonable design configurations have been proposed for major component assemblies and remote handling concepts developed.
