An RF Chopped, Low Emittance HV Electron Source for a 30 Mev, Picosecond Bunch, High Gradient 17 GHz Accelerator
This report describes the design, fabrication, installation and testing of a 550 kV, 17 GHz chopper/prebuncher, low mementum spread, low emittance injection system that has been matched to the requirements of a 17 GHz linear accelerator to demonstrate high quality beam performance over a wide range of loaded beam energies and with sub-picosecond electron bunches. The results of a series of initial beam measurements, performed with the 17 GHz injection and linac systems, are presented; and the test data is shown to compare favorably with the Pase II original design objectives. The need for simple diagnostic that is capable of accurately measuring sub-picosecond electron bunches is emphasized in a concluding section, and a promising RF technique is approved.
