Operational Overview of the NRC's Decommissioning Program Including Current Challenges

This paper provides an overview of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC's) decommissioning program and clarifies the roles of the major offices and the major steps to be taken by licensees within the decommissioning process. Major decommissioning actions (power reactors and materials licensees) taken to date are briefly discussed along with key programs, such as the Site Decommissioning Management Program (SDMP). The paper concludes with a discussion of a number of timely, challenging issues facing the NRC staff and provides an explanation of current actions being taken by the staff to address those challenges.
