Measurement of Current Fluctuations and Charge Transport During Reconnection

The current and magnetic field fluctuations associated with reconnection have been measured in the reversed field pinch plasma configuration. The reconnection current layer is radially broad, comparable to a magnetic island width. The layer width may arise from current transport across the island, and is inconsistent with the widths predicted by resistive MHD, electron pressure or electron inertial effects. The charge flux associated with reconnection is small; i.e., ambipolarity is maintained.
