Determination of Bounding Source Isotopic Composition for Use in Shipping Container Dose Rate

The isotopic composition of the plutonium metal specified for shipping container contents is usually given in terms of maximum percentage of each isotope. Use of all isotopes (including other actinides) at their maximum would result in more than four hundred percent of the total mass. Previous analyses have assumed that using all isotopes at their content limit was conversative The proposed method for determining the bounding isotopic content assumes the isotopes that produce the most alpha particles are present at their maximum concentration and that the least productive isotope is the balance.
