Localized corrosion tests in substitute ocean water at 40 C and 70 C and in 6% FeCl{sub 3} were performed on four classes of stainless steels: Ni-austenitic (traditional and with high nitrogen content); Mn-austenitic nickel free; Duplex (traditional and with high nitrogen content) and ELI ferritic. The highest localized corrosion resistance was exhibited by high nitrogen stainless steels (type Ni-austenitic and Duplex). The negative effect of manganese led to fair performances of Mn-austenitic nickel free stainless steels, in spite of their very high nitrogen content (up to 1%). A modified Herbsled`s formula of Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PRE = %Cr+3.3%Mo+30%N-1.0%Mn), that takes into account the negative effect of Mn was proved to give better linear fit with experimental results than other literature formulas.
