  1. Thermatrix Inc., San Jose, CA (United States)

Thermatrix Inc. has developed an innovative flameless thermal oxidation process that achieves greater than 99.99% destruction of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). The technology provides a viable, safe and economic alternative to ensure compliance with the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. The flameless process is applicable to controlling emissions from process vents, fugitive sources, wastewater treatment and remediation projects. Case histories of Thermatrix installations will be presented including operating and capital cost data, permitting experiences and performance test results. The flameless oxidation process takes place within an inert ceramic matrix. The ceramic bed provides thorough mixing of oxygen with the air toxics and maintains a uniform temperature profile. The heat released by the oxidation reaction is absorbed by the ceramic bed, and its large thermal mass acts similar to a flame arrestor providing for safe operation in classified areas. It also allows the system to treat fume streams with highly variable flow rates and concentrations. The flameless process achieves greater than 99.99% destruction of organics and prevents the formation of products of incomplete combustion (PICs). In addition, carbon monoxide and thermal NO{sub x} emissions are negligible.
