Processing and characterization of Ni{sub 3}Al-AlN composites

An attempt has been made to fabricate Ni{sub 3}Al-AlN composites by nitriding Ni{sub 3}Al. By electromagnetically levitating and melting Ni{sub 3}Al in nitrogen atmosphere, Ni{sub 3}Al reacted with nitrogen and Ni{sub 3}Al matrix composites, reinforced with AlN particulates, were fabricated. A microstructure with AlN particles homogeneously distributed in Ni{sub 3}Al matrix was obtained by controlling the melting time. The morphology of AlN phase produced by this method could be needle or particle-like. Microhardness of Ni{sub 3}Al composite was raised by 50% with AlN reinforcement.
