Microstructure development and conducting properties of in situ formed Cu-20%Nb
- Technical Univ., Aachen (Germany). Inst. fuer Metallkunde und Metallphysik
Large strain, e.g. during wire drawing or rolling, converts an as-cast Cu-20 wt.%Nb into a fiber reinforced in situ metal matrix composite (MMC). The microstructure of such produced composites was investigated by means of scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The electrical conductivity of the MMCs as a function of the deformation state and external magnetic fields was examined and compared to the properties of the pure components. The findings are discussed on the basis of the microstructural changes during deformation. Analytical models, which were developed for the description of conductivity and strength of MMCs, support the experimental findings and corroborate the strong influence of internal boundaries on the properties of Cu-20%Nb.
