Overview on the NRC-BNL benchmark evaluation program of seismic analysis methods for non-classically damped coupled systems

This paper provides an overview of a comprehensive benchmark program for evaluation of state-of-the-art analysis methods and computer programs for seismic analysis of coupled structures with non-classical damping. The benchmark program, which was sponsored by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC), was developed by Brookhaven National Laboratory to evaluate the applicability and limitations of state-of-the-art analysis methods to analyze typical coupled nuclear power plant QWP) structures with non-classical damping. The benchmarking process, benchmark structural models, and the analysis methodologies applied by the program participants are described. The discussions on the benchmark results and findings are then presented. Finally, the principal conclusions and recommendations are provided. It is expected that the findings and insights, as well as recommendations from this program will be useful in developing new acceptance criteria and providing guidance for future regulatory activities involving licensing applications of these alternate methods to coupled systems.
