The behavior of a fluid undergoing a phase change from liquid to vapor while flowing through a duct is of interest to engineers in many practical situations. For the case of interest to us, geothermal hot water flowing through various channels (well bores, surface pipes, equipment, etc.) may reach its flash point and choke point under appropriate conditions. The problem of a critical flow of two-phase mixture, boosted to a selected stagnation state and allowed to flow through a nozzle orifice into a long straight tube, is treated generically and analytically, making use of the basic laws of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics. Specific calculations have been performed using R-114 as the flowing medium. An attempt is made to identify and describe all possible flow conditions in and downstream of the nozzle for all possible stagnation conditions. (LEW)

THE FLOW OF LOW-DENSITY, HIGH SPEED PLASMA THROUGH A MAGNETIC BARRIER

A low-density, high-speed hydrogen plasma stream is carried by a uniform guiding field B/sub 0/ through a barrier field of magnitude DELTA B. The transmission ratio DELTA I/I/sub 0/is found theoretically as a function of DELTA B/B/sub 0/, the plasma stream speed (v), and the electron and ion temperatures (T) and masses. For a plasma with v = l.3 x 10/sup 7/ cm/sec, T approximately 5 ev, and B/sub 0/ = 780 gauss, DELTA I/I/sub 0/ is measured as a function of DELTA B/B/sub 0/ from DELTA B/B/sub 0/ = 3 to 25. (T.F.H.)
Collisionless plasma flow through a decreasing magnetic field

Plasma flowing through a decreasing magnetic field, as in a bundle divertor, experiences a drop in potential. The decrease is calculated using a 1-D model in which the ion distribution is calculated self-consistently. This is compared with the results of an earlier model developed for bundle divertors; the two solutions are in good agreement for usual values of the mirror ratio. This calculation, however, gives a continuous, well-behaved solution as the mirror ratio approaches unity, whereas the previous model gave a discontinuous result.

Our research is directed toward developing and validating macroscopic, continuum-based models and supporting effective property models because of their widespread utility within the context of this project.
