Analysis of the damage zone at a semicircular notch clarifies the irreversible deformation behavior of some ductile polymers in a triaxial stress state. Plasticity concepts describe the thickness dependence of shear-yielding modes in polycarbonate, whereas impact-modified poly(vinyl chloride) deforms by a cavitation mechanism that is described by a critical volume strain. Contributions of both shear and cavitation mechanisms are observed in poly(vinyl chloride). 30 refs., 11 figs., 2 tabs.
