Haling principle - an effective tool for designing PWR reload patterns

The Haling Principle provides a simple means for depleting a core by assuming the power distribution remains constant during depletion. This technique has its advantages and disadvantages. A recent article states that the Haling Principle is not consistent with maximizing the thermal margin of a boiling water reactor. However, it can be an ideal method for solving other problems. The automatic optimum reloading of a nuclear power reactor requires solution to many complex problems. Several of these key problems can be simplified by using the Haling Principle. The first calculation to perform to reload a core is to determine the lifetime. The Haling computed core lifetime is close to the core lifetime determined by the standard depletion method, and the Haling calculation also separates the burnable poison (BP) assignment from calculations used to determine the fuel configuration. The Haling Principle is used to identify the hot fuel assemblies during the reloading calculations. The validation of the Haling Principle for these two applications have been examined in this study. The results reveal that this technique can be used as a powerful tool in reloading a pressurized water reactor (PWR).
