The Savannah River site (SRS) has operated since the early 1950s, producing nuclear materials for the US government. Currently, the Westinghouse Savannah River Company operates the site under a contract with the US Department of Energy. The materials production mission of the site has declined in recent years, and a number of facilities are surplus or will become surplus soon. Consequently, the site mission is changing to include decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) of many contaminated facilities. No facilities have been decommissioned to date; however, much useful experience has been gained in decontaminating facilities and equipment for other missions or for continued use.
