In late 1992, Westinghouse and the Korea Nuclear Fuel Company (KNFC) signal a technology license agreement. It was agreed that Westinghouse would provide KNFC with the design capability to independently perform reload core design in the nuclear, thermal-hydraulic, fuel rod, mechanical, and non-loss-of-coolant-accident (LOCA) design disciplines. The agreement was unique because of (a) the extremely large group of multidisciplined trainees, (b) the training of mix of new and experienced engineers, and (c) the acceleration of the training schedule to attain designer qualification. There were eight nuclear, three thermal-hydraulic, three fuel rod, and three non-LOCA trainee engineers. This paper describes KNFC`s design needs, the way that Westinghouse and KNFC worked together to have KNFC personnel acquire expertise in Westinghouse reload core design technology, and KNFC`s experience to date utilizing Westinghouse technology.
