In support of the installation of the thermocouples and Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) sensor arrays and the injection/extraction well system for the Dynamic Underground Stripping (DUS) remediation at the 311-M Solvent Storage Tank Pad Area, SRTC collected soil plug samples as part of the drilling operations. These samples were analyzed by GC headspace method. The principal analytes were trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE). In general, this effort, in combination with the soil concentration measurements by IT Corporation, provides an initial assessment of the pre-operational conditions at the DUS site. A specific objective of the SRTC data collection is to supplement and confirm the IT sampling. Concentrations indicating DNAPL in the immediate area were found in boring TM11 in the shallow vadose zone. The remaining four borings indicate much lower levels of TCE and PCE. PCE is the predominant contaminant at this location. The data indicate DNAPL is present in the vicinity of the 311-M Solvent Storage Tank Pad. The precise volume and spatial distribution cannot be determined from the SRTC sample results due to the limited data set.
