The {sup 18}O-selective IR multiphoton dissociation of methyl isopropyl ether C{sub 3}H{sub 7}OCH{sub 3} irradiated by a pulsed CO{sub 2} laser, was studied. The dissociation yields of both isotopic components ({beta}{sub 18} and {beta}{sub 16}) and the selectivity for the {sup 18}O isotope ({alpha} = {beta}{sub 18}/{beta}{sub 16}) were measured as functions of laser radiation frequency, energy fluence, and ether partial pressure. At a laser radiation wavenumber of 1041.3 cm{sup {minus}1}, the dissociation yields and selectivities attain the values {beta}{sub 18} = 3.5%, {alpha}(18/16) = 25 and {beta}{sub 18} = 6.5%, {alpha}(18/16) = 16 at energy fluences of 3.0 and 3.5 J/cm{sup 2}, respectively. Methanol and acetaldehyde are the main detectable oxygen-containing products of C{sub 3}H{sub 7}OCH{sub 3} dissociation, thus testifying that this molecule dissociates by at least two pathways.
