Realizing high-performance parallel computing CRADA No. TC-0319-92

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/757019· OSTI ID:757019
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has completed a CRADA with IBM Corp. and BioNumerik Pharmaceuticals (BNP), a small business located in San Antonio, TX. BNP is using computer simulation to design and develop new anti-cancer drugs. Current drug design methods can take up to 12 years and $400 million dollars to bring a drug to market. BNP hopes to reduce both time and cost by as much as 75 percent. The computer simulation of drug compounds requires extremely sophisticated parallel programs and the world's fastest computer systems. This CRADA integrated the successful parallel programming language research at the Laboratory and IBM's emerging massively parallel hardware technology. We defined and released Sisal 90, a high-performance functional language for scientific computations, ported the Optimizing Sisal Compiler to a massively parallel computer system, released an improved programming environment, and developed several important molecular dynamics codes in Sisal.
