New ternary gallides with the KHg{sub 2} and CaIn{sub 2} structures

In previous studies of the R-Ni-Ga ternary system (R = rare-earth metal), the following ternary phases (33.3 at.% R) were prepared and investigated: RNiGa (structure type TiNiSi), RNi{sub x}Ga{sub 2-x} (CaIn{sub 2} and KHg{sub 2}), and RNi{sub x}Ga{sub 6-x} with the Lu{sub 3}CoGa{sub 5} structure; note that, in the yttrium and ytterbium systems, only equiatomic compounds were revealed. A systematic study of interactions in the Y(Yb)-Ni-Ga systems along the RNi{sub x}Ga{sub 2-x} sections allowed the authors to find new ternary phases. In this paper, the authors report the results on the crystal structures of these compounds.
