This paper summarizes the development of the Melt-Dilute treatment technology for disposal of aluminum-based spent nuclear fuel. The Melt-Dilute (M-D) treatment technology includes three basic component technologies of: (1) the melt-dilute process; (2) casting process; and (3) off-gas treatment. Additional development activities leading to construction of an integrated facility to treat and store the melt-dilute form at the Savannah River Site, ready for shipment to the federal repository, are also underway. A phased program to implement the M-D treatment technology is described.
