Recent studies show that an infrared cutoff plays a crucial role in obtaining gauge-independent damping rates for hot gauge theories calculated within the Braaten-Pisarski resummation scheme. In this Brief Report we consider further the main issue involved of when such a cutoff should be removed as the mass-shell limit is approached.
